Why Do Teenagers Take Up Smoking?

There was a time when smoking was only considered a problem limited to adult population. As the times have changed and so have the smoking demographics. With every passing day, there is a significant increase in the number of youths who smoke. Many studies have been undertaken to spot that factors which incentivize these youths to take up the cigarette. Below are some of the conclusions of these studies.

Peer pressure has been identified among the commonest factors which lead to teens taking up smoking. If one child in a group starts to smoke, slowly another one will take up and then another and then another till everybody starts to smoke. Almost all of the youths say that they took up smoking because someone in their class asked them to. Some started with a ‘try at least once’ but ended up with the habit full time.

A number of kids announced that they took up smoking in order that they can gain increased social acknowledgment. The kids who are suffering from incompetency complex or other social withdrawal cases are particularly susceptible to this one. They believe that if they smoke, they’d become more popular among their fellows. If you suspect that your child has a problem or social withdrawal, it is vital that you deal with it before smoking comes into picture.

The family environment can also be responsible in getting the kid dependent on the habit. If either or both the parents are smoking, the child will feel about convinced to try the habit too. Children who have smokers around are more likely to take up the habit. It is because of this reason that you have got to avoid smoking in front of your kids as much as practical.

Celebrities are great influential factors in this context. Celebrity acclamation can make your kid pick up this habit. Numerous children are inspired by what stars do. If they watch stars smoking on screen ; they have a tendency to emulate them. They feel that if they will smoke; they too will become as cool as the film stars on the screen. You can help your child know the difference between the onscreen life and the genuine life.

The myth that smoking is the ‘in thing’ is another excuse kids take up smoking. Teens would like to be at the center-stage of attention and they think smoking will help them get there. The results are that they start it for kicks but gradually become hooked on smoking.

These are only some reasons why your kid may take up smoking. But, you can avoid the majority of these causes by training him about the bulk of smoking. You want to inform your kid that smoking is not good for him. Try and avoid these causes and you will be ready to keep your youngster off this unpleasant habit.
